Keep reading to find out how you can put together a fun and easy Smartphone Scavenger Hunt for your next vacation!
School is about to start up for us again, and I’m gearing up for the busiest school year for our family yet. I’m super excited to have all four kids in school for five days a week, but the downside is that each kid has a completely different schedule, and one is at a completely different (pre)school. In the two or so hours each morning that I’ll have all to myself, I have to get most of my work, errands, and PTA duties done, because once the two younger ones are home, I can barely sit down for five minutes at a time. So, when it comes down to it, I’m going to have a lot of coordinating to do.
Which means my middle schooler gets to keep a phone in his backpack.
We’ve written about the Walmart Family Mobile $49.88 PLUS plan powered by T-Mobile before because, well, we love it. The $49.88 PLUS plan is Walmart’s best priced no-contract wireless plan, has no contract, no activation fees, no late fees, and is super easy to start or switch. We canceled our extra line for the summer since the kids were with us most of the time and we weren’t worried about getting a hold of them, and it was so easy to head back into Walmart this past week and activate the new phone for the school year.
The $49.88 PLUS Plan includes unlimited Talk, Text, & Data (which includes up to 15GB of 4G LTE † then 2G*) PLUS a free VUDU** movie rental credit valued at $7.00 each month you renew the service. (Yay, we can bring back Family Movie Night again!)
(Disclaimer: All prices for phones and plans included in this post are accurate as of the date of posting; however, these prices are subject to change. Please refer to this page or your local Walmart for current pricing)
But before we send our middle schooler off to school with his new LG L59 Grace phone, we decided to have a little fun with it!
We took the newly-activated phone up to Downtown Fullerton for a fun scavenger hunt with a surprise ending. In all the years I’ve lived in Southern California, I’ve been to Downtown Fullerton maybe twice, and my kids have never been there! It’s only about 45 minutes from our house (on a good traffic day) which made it a perfect spot for a fun day trip.
How to put together your Smartphone Scavenger Hunt:
- Information on the city/town you’re visiting
- Two Smartphones with reliable service
- A little spending money
Step 1: Research! In order to put together a scavenger hunt, you have to do a little research. I got really lucky, and found a PDF online of a walking tour through Downtown Fullerton that listed all kinds of different historical markers and places of interest. Jackpot! I pared it down to nine easy spots, plus found a tenth spot that would be our surprise ending. If you’re not able to find anything online, call the local visitor’s center and ask them if they have any information they can send to you. This may need to be done a few weeks ahead of time, but if you’re a last-minute person like me, I’ll show you how to do it on the fly, too!
Step 2: Write your clues! I wrote mine on my phone in the notes app. It was super easy to copy and paste them into a text and send them one at a time. I didn’t have to spend a ton of time on my phone, and could focus on being part of the game.
Step 3: Head to your destination, hand a phone to the kids and start your game! Depending on their ages, they may need a little bit of gentle guidance to show them where they’re going. If they’re older, they can probably utilize their map app or search engine for help. Ours were easy enough that they were able to get through nine clues in about an hour.
We took a break before the last clue for dinner, but depending on the time of day and how much time you have, you could factor a meal into your clues! My favorite part about this game is how customizable it is. You can make it as easy or as difficult as you want, and you can sneak in little bits of history or facts into the clues. They won’t realize they’re learning something, but they are!
We used our last clue for dessert, but depending on where you are and what you’re doing that day, it could be anything! A gift shop, a movie theater, or anything cool that you want to surprise the kids with.
If you’re trying to do a smartphone scavenger hunt on the fly, you can do it more of like an “I Spy” type situation, or text questions for your kids to answer by reading historical markers or plaques as you go.
With our Walmart Family Mobile $49.88 PLUS plan, I don’t have to worry about running out of data, so we can do a Smartphone Scavenger Hunt anywhere we go in the United States without adding any extra charges to our bill. It’s a fun way to explore a new city and get the kids excited about learning facts and history that they normally would roll their eyes out. Plus, it’s a good excuse to get a fancy dessert.
Do you have any fun ways to use your smartphone on vacation?
